Ayahuasca

Creative Development of the ''Ayahuasca'' Collection

One of the distinctive features of Amazonian shamanism is the use of psychoactive plants to induce hallucinations, 'soul trips' and visions. Plants have power; they share ancestral knowledge. Thus, various Indigenous ethnic groups in the Brazilian Amazon have a long tradition of using plants. One of such plant, Ayahuasca, has powerful psychoactive properties, promotes an encounter with “the divine” or a personal "self-discovery".

From this research came the desire to transcribe, in a video and further graphic research, what could come out of this sensorial experience, such as images of place temporarily altered and a sense of elevated sights and sounds.

The collection divides itself three times (through three pieces): nature as an organic form, radiant urban designs, and the meeting of both worlds.

Nature as an organic form brings inspiration to the first part, a shoulder piece showered with petals in both sides and held together by diamond bands.

The second part, now a pair of ear pieces, comes from skyscrapers and radiant urban designs, represented by geometric forms, diamond lines and a pear shaped Paraíba Tourmaline which comes to life surrounded by its pink-enamelled mounting.

Finally, a colourful brooch gives us a glimpse of both worlds turned into one. The delicacy of the flower petals opposes radiant lines that give life to the centre stone, a pear-shaped diamond.

Study made at the second year of Jewelry Design at the Haute École de Joaillerie.
